The chairman of the board of observers of Georgian Railway, Koka Guntsadze, recently stated that special activities are underway to increase the capacity of the railways’ effective cargo transportation. According to him, the most problematic segment of the railway track in Georgia is Rikoti Pass.
It is known that there is one track tunnel there built almost 150 years ago and the trains have serious delays in running through this tunnel. It needs time and money to construct the second track and tunnel, and only after this will the capacity of cargo turnover through Georgia increase. The project of constructing the second tunnel is ready and presumably will be finished by 2017.
