Number of motor vehicles operating in Turkey exceeds 18 million

As of January 2014, the number of motor vehicles operating in Turkey exceeded 18,052,195, a message posted on the website of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) said on March 18.
Around 51.9 percent of the total number of motor vehicles fell to private cars, 16.4 percent - trucks, 15.1 percent - motorcycles, 2.3 percent - public transport and 14.3 percent - motor vehicles for various purposes, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute.
The volume of car sales in Turkey decreased by 27.5 percent in February compared to the same period of 2013 and amounted to 35,021, according to the institute.
The sale of commercial vehicles decreased by 19.25 percent in Jan.-Feb. compared to the same period of 2012, the institute said. By comparison, 67,691 commercial vehicles were sold in Jan-Feb. while this figure was equal to 83,830 in the same period of 2013.
The number of motor vehicles operating in Turkey hit 17,939,447 as of October 2013, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute.
Turkey ranks sixth in Europe for motor vehicle production. Brands such as Ford, FIAT, Renault, Toyota, Honda, Opel, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and MAN are produced or assembled in the country.
