On April 22, Moscow hosted foreign ministers of five Caspian region countries: Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif, expressed his country’s concern over the fact that non-Caspian basin countries want to get involved in certain issues over Caspian Sea exploitations.
According to Zarif, the Caspian Sea region should become a resource for oil and gas as well as a source for sustainable regional peace and stability. Countries should also maintain protecting environment as a central issue.
The Iranian minister also asked neighboring countries to stop the militarization in the Caspian Sea. As a result, he said the sea would contribute to economic welfare and regional development.
