Irakli Kobakhidze, 36, has taken the position of Executive Secretary of the Georgian Dream (GD) party. The Georgian Dream’s political council made the decision on January 27.
The opposition United National Movement (UNM) speculated that there was close cooperation between the Georgian-Dream and Nino Burjanadze’s pro-Russian Democratic Movement-United Georgia party, as Irakli Kobakhidze’s father Gia Kobakhidze, was a member of Burjanadze’s party. However, the latter quit politics for his son’s career.
According to Kakha Kaladze, Secretary General of the Georgian Dream, he was hopeful for the new executive secretary.
“Today the party has a new executive secretary. Now we really have an opportunity to work hard and fundamentally strengthen our party.”
“We all know how the Georgian Dream was set up. Almost all of Georgia united around Bidzina Ivanishvili for a single purpose – to remove the United National Movement. We wanted to win the parliamentary elections and we succeeded,” Kaladze said.
Kaladze emphasized that the party faces multiple problems, especially in the regions.
Irakli Kobakhidze stated that he was ready to take this responsibility.
“Initially we should draft an action plan and carry out various activities to strengthen the party for the upcoming 2016 parliamentary election,” Kobakhidze said.
