6939 road accidents registered in Georgia in 2016

Official data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia revealed that in total 6939 road accidents were registered in 2016. It is 7% more than the data of road accidents registered in 2015.
However, the number of deaths in road accidents decreased by 3% in 2016 compared to 2015. The number of injured increased by 8%.
As for Tbilisi, in 2016 a total of 3264 accidents were registered by the MIA, while the number of deaths was 98 and the number of injured 4173.
Compared to 2015, the road accidents increased by 9 percent in Tbilisi.
In addition, in 2016 police data revealed that 154 pedestrians died overall throughout Georgia, with 59 of them registered in Tbilisi.
In 2016, 2159 pedestrians were injured. The number of deaths of pedestrians increased by 4%, while the number of injured increased by 8% in the capital.
The main causes of road accidents are speeding and drunk driving.
On January 16-17, the MIA carried out special police control activities, which revealed 129 incidents of criminal violations and 1088 administrative offences. Out of these, 63 cases pertained to the illegal purchase and possession of firearms and ammunition, and 19 cases concerned the illegal purchase, possession and selling of drugs.
During the police control activities, police officers detained 22 persons for crimes under the jurisdiction of the Criminal Code and 42 persons under the Code of Administrative Offences.
