Borjomi Gorge fire: Donation accounts open for restoring burnt forest
Wednesday, August 30
Georgian citizens, business and banking sector representatives are teaming up to restore the forest burnt following the recent devastating wildfire in the Borjomi Gorge, with several social campaigns already in full swing.
“To sustain this commendable spirit among our citizens, and to consolidate and coordinate resources, the Administration of the Government will facilitate a unified e-platform to reflect all activities and initiatives under the program for the Borjomi forest restoration,” announced the Government of Georgia.
In addition, the Finance Ministry's Treasury Service has opened special bank accounts in both national and foreign currencies in order to finance firefighting operations and to restore the forest in the Borjomi Gorge.
“The e-portal will enable us to ensure the openness and transparency of deposit and expenditure operations, so that every citizen may trace the spending of each tetri donated by them,” reads the statement released by the administration of the Government.
Today the World Bank announced it is ready to support Georgia in terms of fighting the Borjomi wildfire.
“We have a program referring to the protection of the environment and forests. We are ready to help Georgia during and after the crisis. We will ensure financial and technical support. The group of specialists will assess the situation to elaborate a further plan," said Mecry Tembon, the World Bank Regional Director to South Caucasus, who met Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili today at the special staff in Borjomi.
Meanwhile, together with the mineral water producing company Borjomi, Georgia’s TBC Bank will be restoring the 10 hectares of the area burned during the fire in Borjomi forest.
Alongside TBC Bank Group, PASHA Bank, Anaklia Development Consortium, Anaklia City, Coca Cola Georgia and Lisi Development also joined the Borjomi campaign.
Furthermore, the Bank of Georgia has taken a decision to allocate 1 million GEL for the liquidation of disastrous outcomes of conflagrations that broke out in several regions of Georgia, as well as for organizing fire prevention systems.
