Georgian Weightlifter Talakhadze Wins Gold, Sets New World Record

(ANAHEIM, United States) -- Georgian weightlifter Lasha Talakhadze won a gold medal at the World Championship in the United States, setting a new world record in the process and improving his personal medal count.

Competing in the 105+kg, Talakhadze’s world record-setting performance came after he scored 477kg in the clean and jerk categories, breaking his own record set in 2016.

Iranians Ali Hashemi and Behdad Salimi took home silver and bronze.

At the 2016 Olympics Talakhadze completed a snatch of 215 kg (breaking the world record set by Iranian weightlifter Behdad Salimi) and completed a clean and jerk of 258 kg to set a new world record of 473 kg and win a gold medal.

Georgia completed the US World Championship in Anaheim with a record 7 medals, including gold, one silver and one bronze.
