Georgia’s capital Tbilisi will have a new parking system from 2019. The new model envisages the establishment of zonal parking system in the capital.

The information was released by Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said at the meeting of Tbilisi Government.

According to him, a new model of parking was developed within the new transport policy.

“The new model envisages a zonal parking, which we have already drafted and will send it to the Parliament. I think that implementation of this reform is very important and this is the part of the transport policy we have presented some time ago," Kaladze said.

The mayor also talked about the shortcomings in the parking process, including the economic activities at the parking places or lots. Kakha Kaladze claims this is a violation of the law and instructed appropriate agencies to respond to it.

“Municipal parking lots are arranged for everyone and the fact that some shopkeepers or people do not let the others park their vehicles there is concerning. This is the violation of the law…This problem needs to be solved as soon as possible,” Kaladze said and instructed Giorgi Bagrationi, Head of Supervision Service, to eliminate such shortcomings.

In addition, Kaladze stated that taxi drivers, who already have their working license, will be able to park their cars for free.

“We plan to allocate special places in the economically active zones of the capital, where licensed taxi drivers will have the opportunity to stop the cars without any tax…European states have the same practice and we should follow their example,” the Mayor added.

Kaladze presented new Tbilisi Transport Policy on July 24, which is focused on defusing traffic jams and reducing air pollution in the capital.

The policy also aims at ensuring safe movement of the pedestrians and the development of public transport and parking system.

It envisages also aims at reducing private vehicles use and improving public transport services in the capital.
