The vessel owned by Van Oord, “Athena”, which is a self-propelled cutter suction dredger, entered Anaklia this weekend.
The vessel will dredge 5 million cubic meters of sand in Anaklia.
Dutch marine contractor Van Oord was selected to dredge millions of cubic meters of sand for Georgia’s first deepwater port, on the Black Sea earlier this summer.
Mamuka Khazaradze, the founder of Anaklia Development Consortium (ADC) which has won the tender for construction of the port in Anaklia, delivered a speech congratulating the ADC on the commencement of the first phase of construction works.
“Anaklia Development Consortium started marine construction works. 1500 individuals will be employed in Anaklia Port directly and more - indirectly,” he said.
He noted that 75% of ships in the Black Sea cannot enter Georgian ports, due to the depth of existing ports.
“This project involves investors from different countries including the United States, Netherlands, Uzbekistan, etc. and is really important for the region,” he noted.
Giorgi Kobulia, Minister of Economy of Georgia said that this project will contribute to the economic development of Georgia.
“This project accepts two important challenges for developing Georgian economy. First, it is the utilization of the geographic location of Georgia and establishing the country as a logistic corridor. Secondly- we want Georgia to be a marine country, through developing marine academies and other marine services,” said Kobulia.
Anaklia Deep Sea Port will give Georgia a chance to become a regional, economic and transportation hub.
Anaklia Development Consortium is a consortium made up of TBC Holding from Georgia and Conti International from the United States.
TBC Holding was founded by Mamuka Khazaradze who also is the Founder and Chairman of TBC Bank JSC, one of the leading commercial banks operating in Georgia.
Conti International is a major developer of infrastructure and capital projects.
ADC has established a framework of preliminary agreements with diverse global players in port and transport infrastructure for Anaklia Port’s long-term success.
