Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, whose presidential term expires this month, has stated that the issue of audio recordings released recently, which allegedly speaks about certain illegalities by the state officials, is alarming and the government should hold a meeting and discuss such issues with the participation of president.
Margvelashvili has mentioned the recordings related to the Omega Group Business Corporation released by Rustavi 2 opposition-minded TV channel this and the last month, in which a businessman speaks about the governmental pressure.
The ruling party and some figures involved in the recordings say that the recordings were staged to discredit the government.
“Government responds to such recordings with a smile, which is not a right attitude as people have a different attitude,” Margvelashvili said.
“It is important the government and the president sit, discuss the issues and find an outcome,” Margvelashvili said.
He also said that the current situation in the state, referring to the scandal of recordings, will not benefit fair and transparent elections.
Margvelashvili also stated that he is against the gov’t-initiated sale of marijuana for medical and cosmetic purposes.
A member of the Georgian Dream Gedevan Popkhadze said that Margvelashvili could have initiated the government meeting “for his own personal or other profit.”
He added that the government is responsible before parliament, not the president.
