The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia announced last week that they have drafted a bill to address sexual crimes committed against minors.
The ministry has presented the bill for the civil sector and stated that those convicted for sexual crimes against minors will never be able to get employed at the educational institutions.
The ministry did not say what will be the sentence for sexual crimes but stated that the punishment will definitely become tougher.
“The convicts will be deprived of many of their civil rights and they will be under permanent control by law enforcers after release, to prevent the repetition of the crime,” the ministry says.
The current legislation provides five to seven years in prison for indecent against children under 14.
The sentence for sexual crimes against minors may reach 20 years based on the circumstances.
Last month a nine-year-old girl was killed in Gori.
The family says that they have been shown a video, recorded in the phone of an alleged killer, which reveals sexual abuse towards the minor.
Last week in Batumi a minor was abused sexually in a public transport. A 55-year-old man has been detained for the incident.
However, the family says that the girl is so afraid that she is unable to walk alone to school.
Also in the last week, the Georgian media reported about a sexual abuse of a schoolgirl by her 70-year-old teacher.
The bill will be sent to parliament for discussions and final approval.
