Juan Guaido's representative: we will restore relations with Georgia

Venezuela will restore relations with Georgia and recognize Georgia’s jurisdiction over the occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The statement was made by the representative of Venezuela’s Interim President Juan Guaido, Carlos Alfredo Vecchio during the meeting Georgian Foreign Minister, David Zalkaliani in Washington on February 8.

“After we, the interim president and the transitional government, have full control over the territory of our country, we will work with Georgia… We will support Georgia and recognize it as the only country with jurisdiction over the occupied territories. The current situation contradicts international law," Vecchio stated.

The information about the meeting of Zalkaliani and Vecchio was released by the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

The ministry says the sides discussed recent development in Venezuela. Zalkaliani once again reaffirmed Georgia’s support to Guaido.

According to him, Georgia will never recognize Maduro's regime. Zalkaliani noted that the Georgian authorities did not recognize the results of the presidential election held in Venezuela in 2018, which was held in an undemocratic environment. According to him, Georgia recognizes the National Assembly as the only legitimate body of the country and Juan Guido as an interim president.

As it was noted at the meeting, Georgia is closely monitoring the ongoing processes in Venezuela and hopes that the country will soon return to the international jurisdiction, which will allow Georgia and Venezuela to restore full-fledged relations between the two countries based on the principle of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze said in late January that Georgia recognizes Juan Guaido as Interim President of Venezuela.

“We hope that National Assembly of Venezuela will establish a transitional government, prepare free and fair elections and ensure the peaceful transition of power. Georgia supports the courageous people of Venezuela in their fight for democracy,” the PM’s tweet reads.
