Endangered giant turtle found on the coast of Poti

An endangered giant sea turtle was found on the coastal line of Poti. It came from the Aegean Sea in the Black Sea water area. Due to the lack of appropriate conditions in Batumi Delphinium and Aquarium, the turtle was taken to the hotel Paragraph aquarium.

The turtle was identified as The Caretta Caretta Turtle (known also as loggerhead sea turtle) that live in the Mediterranean, they spawn along the Laganas Gulf.

They can have considerable dimensions (the largest weights 140 kg. and measures circa 120 cm whereas the smallest measures 80 cm.) but, in spite of this, they are very fast.

Loggerhead sea turtles were once intensively hunted for their meat and eggs; consumption has decreased, however, due to worldwide legislation. Despite this, turtle meat and eggs are still consumed in countries where regulations are not strictly enforced.

All loggerhead turtle populations are listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The biggest threats facing loggerhead turtles are bycatch in fishing gear, loss, and degradation of nesting habitat, vessel strikes, and entanglement in marine debris.

The Caretta Caretta Turtle found in Poti needed urgent care, therefore it will spend some time in the Paragraph aquarium rehabilitating, after which it will be returned to its natural habitat.
