Former Ruling Party MP Claims to Raise Responsibility of Parliament Speaker

A former member of the Georgian Dream (GD) ruling party Eka Beselia, who has recently quit the GD as she says because of the support of biased judges by the ruling party, claims that she is “writing down all the violations” of Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze.

“I will definitely raise the issue of Kobakhidze's responsibility,” Beselia says.

“He does not know how to communicate, how to behave and how to follow the rules and regulations,” she stated.

Beselia and Kobakhidze have been in open confrontation since December 2018, when Beselia left the post of the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament, claiming that Kobakhidze suppressed her to support the list of “biased judges” for the Supreme Court of Georgia.

Kobakhidze and the founder of the Georgian Dream ruling party Bidzina Ivanishvili responded shortly that Beselia lied and that the issue of her removal from the committee chairmanship was decided in the summer of 2018 and Beselia knew about.

The controversies were followed by the release of Beselia’s private life footage on Youtube, with those ordering the release of the footage have not been identified so far.

In February 2019 Beselia and several MPs of the GD left the party.

She announced plans to found a new political movement which will fight for justice.

The Georgian media speculates that former PM Irakli Garibashvili, who has just returned to politics, may replace Kobakhidze in the role, while Kobakhidze will be elected as the head of the Supreme Court of Georgia.

The parliamentary elections will be held in the country next year.
