The News in Brief

Thursday, June 27
Statement by the United Nations Development Programme on the introduction of a proportional electoral system in Georgia.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Georgia welcomes the decision by the Georgian authorities to hold fully proportional elections in 2020. Not only does this show a laudable will to compromise in the face of protest; it is also a step forward in strengthening parliamentary democracy and ensuring that election results fully reflect citizens’ aspirations.

In preparing and passing the legislation needed to translate this decision into practice, UNDP counts on an inclusive process embracing the full spectrum of political and civic actors in Georgia.

As a long-standing partner in Georgia’s challenging process of democratic transformation, UNDP stands ready to continue to support electoral and parliamentary reforms wherever needed.
