Members of Rustavi District Organization and Civil Activists of European Georgia rally in front of City Hall

Nino Imedashvili, the chairperson of Rustavi District Organization of European Georgia, members of the organization and civil activists, held a rally in front of the City Hall. According to the protesters, there is a specific smell in the city lately, which they say is likely to spread from the mushroom factory "White Hat" at the entrance to Rustavi. The protesters demanded that the relevant state agencies take effective steps and terminate the operation of the enterprise. According to them, the enterprise should immediately stop working and install filters.

“The smell that afflicts half the city every evening remains an unsolved problem. We demand from the local authorities to solve the problem proactively and quickly, with the involvement of experts to determine the harm to human beings and the production of environmental products in this situation," said Imedashvili, chairwoman of the Rustavi regional organization of European Georgia.

Rustavi Mayor Irakli Tabagua met with the protesters. As the mayor said to them, Rustavi City Hall has repeatedly requested the Environmental Protection Service to solve the problem, but the latter failed to respond on time.

“We, together with the City Hall, monitored, purchased the tests ourselves and conducted the experiment. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the unpleasant odor spreads from the mushroom compost plant and the substances are dissolved in the air. I had a meeting with the management of the company, as they noted, during the production cycle the technological process was disrupted. They promised that this problem would be eliminated in the next week, and the specific smell will not spread throughout the city anymore,” Rustavi Mayor Irakli Tabagua told reporters.

Rustavi residents and civil activists also protested at the mushroom factory on October 15. Specialists from regional environmental and food safety departments were also in attendance to monitor the factory.
