Signing Ceremony of the Three Projects within the GGP Grassroots Human Security Grant Program of the Embassy of Japan in Georgia

On December 3 the Signing Ceremony was held for three projects, funded by the Government of Japan, based on the goodwill of the Japanese people. The Signing Ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Tadaharu Uehara, high-level representatives of the government of Georgia, regional, municipal governance, and representatives of civil society. The projects are funded within the GGP Grassroots Human Security Grant Program of the Embassy of Japan and aim to contribute to the development of infrastructure of mountainous areas, development of quality control infrastructure for agricultural production, overcoming poverty and supporting overall sustainable development. The three projects are:
1. Purchasing Heavy Equipment for Road Clearance and Infrastructure Works in Tusheti – within this project, heavy equipment will be purchased to clear roads in Tusheti and increase connectivity and mobility of Tushetians, for access to healthcare and other critical facilities. Implementer: Tusheti Development Fund.
2. Purchasing Laboratory Equipment for Agricultural Center in Zugdidi – within this project, laboratory equipment will be purchased for the agricultural center in Zugdidi, which will enable to provide laboratory examinations and provide quality certificates, for enabling more competitiveness of local farmers and for promotion of food safety in Georgia. Implementer: AFAD.
3. Purchasing Agricultural Equipment for Ambrolauri Municipality – within this project, agricultural machinery will be purchased for Ambrolauri population, to promote economic revitalization of the region through revival of agriculture. Implementer: Abkhazinterkonti.
Since the independence of Georgia, Japan has provided 176 grants within the GGP Grassroots Human Security Program, totaling over 17 million USD, in addition to other grant schemes. The GGP program aims to support human security in Georgia in the following priority fields: environment protection, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare and education. The major principles behind the GGP program are overcoming poverty, sustainable development, inclusiveness and participatory growth.
