The Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Gakharia, visited the Imereti region and met with the representatives of the tourism sector. The leader of the government talked about the plans of the leadership about the future steps of opening up the country.
According to Gakharia, the whole country needs to work together, as he said, it is essential for people to know that in contrast with other countries, the spread of the Coronavirus is low and it creates additional opportunities for the development of tourism.
The Prime Minister thereby underlined that it is vital for Georgians to holiday domestically and to retain the proceeds from tourism within Georgia. As he said, “at a technical level, the Ministry of Health of Georgia is inspecting several hotels in the Imereti region to identify those that are ready to admit tourists as soon as the industry reopens. Initially, domestic tourism will kick-start, and I am confident that it will generate a substantially significant demand.”
Gakharia underlined the significance of adherence to safety norms at hotels and thereby noted that the State will provide due support to hotels to make sure that they admit more visitors. He also announced that the international flights in Georgia are planned to start from July 1st, as the pandemic seems to be getting better.
In Georgia, as of today, there are 809 reported cases. Out of this, 674 have recovered and 13 have died. Around the world, however, the number of confirmed cases is rising every day. As of today, there are already more than 7 million confirmed cases, out of which more than 400,000 have died, and about 3,5 million have recovered.
