Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said in Rome that organizations supported by foreign funding are acting in a coordinated effort to impede Georgia's development. He made the remarks in response to a question about an Imedi TV report on financial backing for online media outlets.

Kobakhidze said the investigation showed "specific facts and details" about outside involvement. "Everyone sees how specific organizations funded by foreign sources are acting in a coordinated manner in order to hinder the development of our country," he stated. He added that this includes efforts "to hinder the implementation of strategic economic projects in our country."

According to Kobakhidze, the goal of these groups is to slow Georgia's economic progress. "The only interest behind this is to somehow try to hinder the development of processes in Georgia, including the processes of economic development," he said. He argued that the attempts have failed, pointing to an average growth rate of 9.7 percent over the past four years. "If it were not for foreign agencies and their activities, their sabotage, naturally the growth rate would have been higher," he claimed.

Kobakhidze said the government will resist what he described as attempts to disrupt key sectors. "Of course, we must oppose all attempts at sabotage, including foreign funded economic attempts at sabotage. The state will be uncompromising in this regard," he noted.

He also said similar efforts had been made in previous years. "We have seen many facts in various directions when they artificially tried to create obstacles for economic projects. We will not allow this in any case," he said, adding that the government intends to safeguard projects in energy and other investment areas that are important for national development.
