The opposition Coalition for Change says the latest European Union Expansion Report confirms that Georgia's prospects of joining the European Union have been severely undermined under the government led by Bidzina Ivanishvili, accusing the ruling Georgian Dream party of steering the country away from its European future.
"The EU Expansion Report published yesterday clearly confirms that under Ivanishvili's Russian regime, Georgia will never become an EU member," the coalition said in a statement.
According to the opposition alliance, the report should serve as an alarm signal for every citizen of Georgia, regardless of political affiliation, and for everyone who sees the country's future within the European Union.
The coalition said the report notes that Georgia's EU accession process is effectively halted and that the European Commission's evaluation of Georgia as a candidate country remains in force only formally.
The statement further accused the government of failing to fulfil the recommendations outlined by the European Commission, arguing that the ruling party continues to undermine democratic principles, the rule of law, fundamental human rights and civil liberties, while consolidating control over state institutions.
The opposition alliance also referred to statements by senior European Union officials regarding the deterioration of relations between Brussels and Tbilisi.
According to the coalition, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy has warned that, because of democratic backsliding and violations of fundamental rights, Georgian Dream is pursuing a path of confrontation with the European Union.
The statement also cited the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, who reportedly said that enlargement policy can no longer remain the central framework of relations between the European Union and Georgia.
The Coalition for Change linked Georgia's deteriorating relations with the EU to what it described as Russia's growing efforts to undermine the country's European aspirations.
"Russia's hybrid war against Georgia's European future is in a decisive phase," the statement reads.
The coalition accused Georgian Dream of seeking to permanently destroy the prospect of Georgia's normal development and deprive the country of the opportunity to secure a dignified, safe and peaceful life for its citizens.
"Our country is ours to protect," the statement said.
Against this backdrop, the opposition alliance called for mass mobilization on November 28, urging tens of thousands of citizens to gather and demonstrate their support for Georgia's European future.
The coalition stressed that the demonstration should send a clear message to the international community that Georgia belongs to its people and that citizens, rather than the ruling authorities, must determine the country's geopolitical direction.
"On November 28, tens of thousands of us must gather and show the whole world that Georgia belongs to the Georgian people. We decide where our country's place is," the statement reads.
The Coalition for Change concluded its statement with a direct political message: "Georgia without Ivanishvili!"
