The Georgian Orthodox Church has not meddled in domestic politics
since the Soviet Union collapsed.The Gamsakhurdia, Shevardnadze
and Saakashvili regimes all pledged loyalty to the Georgian Orthodox
Church, and vice-versa. Under Shevardnadze's rule a concordat
was signed between the state and the Church, recognizing the special

(SOCAR), on strategic cooperation in the oil and gas sectors and

mountains top draw for European tourists
European tourists in Georgia head mostly for the mountains, says
the Tourism Department. The department optimistically claimed
that over 400 000 European tourists have visited Georgia so far

HIV/AIDS
on the increase in Georgia
The number of HIV/AIDS cases in Georgia is increasing, writes
the newspaper Akhali Taoba. Between January and July 203 new cases
were detected. Most victims are drug addicts. (more)
